National security law: Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai arrested on suspicion of foreign collusion, as police detain at least eight others, raid Apple Daily offices

Hong Kong police raided the offices of the tabloid-style Apple Dailynewspaper, after arresting its founder Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, one of his sons, and a senior executive under the new
national security law on Monday.

A police source told the Post that Lai was arrested “for collusion with a foreign country, uttering seditious words and conspiracy to defraud”.As of 4pm, at least nine men between the ages of 23 and 72 had been arrested in the sweeping police operation, and more were likely to be taken into custody over the course of the day.More than 200 police were involved in the raid at the paper’s headquarters in Tseung Kwan O, but a senior officer said it would not target the editorial department or its reporters. Lai was arrested by members of the new National Security Department police unit at his home on Kadoorie Avenue, Ho Man Tin, shortly after daybreak.
