Party leader Xi Jingping has launched several campaigns against conspicuous consumption in the
People's Republic of China. However, more concrete actions to better the lives
of China's hundreds of millions of rural and urban poor will be needed to offset
the potentially destabilizing effects of China's widening income disparity.
