China: Archaeologists Shine Light on Mystery Behind ‘Hanging Coffins’

Archaeologists have shined fresh light on the mystery behind China’s hanging coffins. It seems there could be a direct genetic link between ancient practitioners of the hanging coffin burial tradition—which typically involves mounting them on cliff faces—and the modern Bo people in Southwest China.

This discovery by Chinese Academy of Sciences researchers and collaborators tells us more about the ancestral origins associated with the practice. Hanging coffins have historically been ascribed to the ancient Bo ethnic group, believed to have disappeared after the Ming Dynasty that ruled from 1368 to 1644 and leaving questions about its history.
