Xi has staged more military parades than any Chinese leader since Mao

Today is the third time Chinese leader Xi Jinping has presided over a military parade on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square – equaling the combined total of his three immediate predecessors. Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao each oversaw just one Tiananmen parade, traditionally held on the decennial anniversaries of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Xi continued that custom but also forged his own tradition, designating September 3 a day of national commemoration of Japan’s defeat in World War II and marking the 70th anniversary of that defeat with a massive parade in 2015. Today’s event marks the 80th anniversary of the defeat. The only Chinese leader who staged more military parades was Mao Zedong, who oversaw 11 consecutive National Day spectacles between 1949 and 1959.
