Backlash in China against Nike, Adidas and other global brands for refusing to buy Xinjiang cotton

International brands such as Nike and Adidas have come under fire in China for not using
Xinjiang cotton over claims of genocide and forced labour in the region, coming soon after a
backlash in China against Swedish fashion brand H&M for refusing to source cotton produced in Xinjiang. Chinese state media People’s Daily named the British luxury brand Burberry, American sports brands Nike and New Balance and German athletics wear Adidas as companies that did not source Xinjiang cotton in a social media post on Thursday.

“There are many foreign companies that have released statements which ‘cut ties’ with Xinjiang cotton in the past two years. This included the Better Cotton Initiative members Burberry, Adidas, Nike, New Balance and others,” said the post published on Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter. “Online users have said the Chinese market does not welcome malicious back-stabbers.”
