China, US agree to resume trade talks in phone call ahead of Xi-Trump G20 meeting

The top trade negotiators for China and the United States have agreed to resume discussions to resolve their trade dispute, in a phone conversation on Monday ahead of the high-stakes talks between the two countries’ presidents in Japan this week.

Vice-Premier Liu He, who leads the trade negotiations for the Chinese side, spoke to his US counterparts, Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, according to a brief statement by the official Xinhua news agency on Tuesday morning. “According to the instructions from the phone conversation of leaders of both countries, both sides exchanged views on economic and trade issues. Both sides agreed to continue communication,” the statement said.
