Jiang left home at around 10:30 p.m. on June 3,1989. At about 11:00 p.m. behind the long flower bed in front of Building No.29 at Muxudi, a bullet went through the left-side of his back and came out his chest. He was taken to the Beijing Children's Hospital for emergency treatment, which failed to save him. The hospital certified that he was "dead on arrival." He was cremated on June 7 at Babaoshan and his ashes are kept at home.
