Why Are China and India in a Border Standoff?


China and India are engaged in a new border standoff high in the Himalayas. Tensions between the world’s two most populous nations have been simmering for at least two years and began to roil after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s first visit to India in September 2014 and soured further in June when Chinese moved into disputed territory. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Xi had no formal bilateral meeting at the G20 Summit in Germany in July. What’s behind this new border dispute involving a third country, Bhutan, and how can these two giants and little Bhutan start to talk about getting past this dangerous dispute?
