Bao Tong, former political aide to the late ousted premier Zhao Ziyang, served a seven-year jail term in the wake of the 1989 crackdown on the Tiananmen Square student movement. Since his release, he has remained under continual surveillance and frequent house arrest at his home in Beijing.
