Beijing plans tunnel linking China with Taiwan

China is planning to construct a 126-kilometer undersea tunnel to create a high-speed rail link between the mainland and Taiwan. Beijing’s 13th five-year development plan, unveiled by the China's National People's Congress on March 5, states a cross-strait train route is “planned and under study” in a list and also a map relating to its plans to expand its high-speed rail network. While the Chinese media has welcomed the ambitious rail plan as a project that would “facilitate high-speed communications between the two sides,” netizens have expressed their doubts that Taipei would give the green light to such a project. Read more
